THE THINKING ENVIRONMENT

 

When was the last time you felt truly heard, understood and valued?

Chances are, it’s been a while since someone really listened to you. The kind of listening that gets you thinking and speaking far beyond what you have previously thought or expressed on a particular subject or idea. When it happens, you remember it because it’s such an enriching experience.

And if you’re honest, when was the last time you really listened with the intent of hearing more from another person, rather than waiting for your turn to speak? We’re all guilty of it.

You will have heard of ‘active listening’ but when it comes down to it, there are only two types of listening…

We either listen in order to reply or we listen in order to ignite more of the other person’s thinking and expression of their thoughts.

When we listen to ignite or experience being listened to in this way, it pushes the person speaking’s thoughts further than they may have ever gone before. It takes them to the cutting edge of their thought process and it allows more bold and more complete thinking.

Initiating Quality Thinking Is The Best Way to Generate Quality Decision-Making

When complete thinking is allowed to take place, something remarkable happens – we resolve our own issues and come up with our own best-fitting solutions. This is worth its weight in gold both in corporate and home life.

The trouble is, we rarely get the time, space and agreement to practice interactions with other people in this way, to ignite a complete thinking process and spark higher-quality decision making.

On top of this, we live in such a busy and fast-paced world that most of us barely have time to sit and think through our own thoughts for ourselves for any more than a minute or two. The creative thinking process is further stifled by being in the corporate environment, where the normal mode of communication is a short and sharp ping-ponging back and forth of assertive dialogue and e-mails.

The Thinking Environment is based upon the observation that ‘the quality of everything we, as human beings do, depends upon the quality of the thinking we do first’. This was so beautifully identified over 30 years ago by Nancy Kline, who is the best-selling author of three books, founder of the Time To Think leadership and coaching consultancy and a most wonderful teacher.

It appears that what makes the difference for people thinking well for themselves is the way they are treated by others when thinking. It seems there are ten behaviours that generate the finest independent thinking, and we call these the Ten Components of a Thinking Environment®. When these ten behaviours are practiced, people think for themselves with rigour, imagination, courage and grace.

The question that underpins both the observation and the Thinking Environment framework is ‘how do we help others think well for themselves?’

I have been working with in a Thinking Environment for over 3 years now. I was first introduced to this work by the originator herself Nancy Klein who I met at a conference where she was delivering a truly inspiring session. I have subsequently had extensive training and by Jan 2018 I will be a qualified Thinking Environment coach. I can say from experience that it truly is one of the best gifts you can give to your clients, team members and yourself. It works not only in a work and coaching environment but also at home with your family and spouse/partner to enrich relationships and the decisions we make.

 

One of the core principles underpinning the philosophy is that there are 10 components of a thinking environment – and all need to be present in a way that is relevant for the coach and the coachee.

  2. Equality
  3. Ease
  4. Appreciate
  5. Encourage
  6. Feelings
  7. Information
  8. Diversity
  9. Incisive Questions
  10. Place

 

When all 10 are used, the experience can be profound and when internalised to become habitual it can have many benefits. When it becomes a way of being, it can involve everyone in their own personal development and have a profound effect on the level and richness of communication and understanding.

Most people listen with an intent to REPLY. When we listen with an intent to IGNITE deeper thinking and vocalisation of thoughts we get straight to the heart of our genius and are able to solve problems with ease, speed and intelligence.

Remember, a vast number of people feel unfulfilled at work and many more take time off with stress – this can often be like to feelings of being undervalued and unheard. Back-to-back meetings and a long to do list adds to this stress and reduces productivity and ultimately reduces profitability.

Listening without interruption is one of the greatest gifts you can give someone – a framework that ignites and generates the most qualitative and exquisite thinking the other person.
